Philanthropy Past & Present: From the ‘Founding Fathers’ to the 21st Century Online Talk

To mark the 268th anniversary of the foundation of the Belfast Charitable in 1752 this talk will explore the lives and motivations of those ‘Founding Fathers’ who were present in the George Tavern when the Society was formed, as well as the key early members who fought for over 20 years to construct the Poor House. The talk will conclude with an overview of some of the ongoing work of Belfast Charitable Society today.

From Radical Hotbed to the Age of Riots: Belfast 1775-1886 by Dr Éamon Phoenix

The first virtual talk as part of our Reconciliation Fund supported Autumn Series 'Belfast: Georgian Town to Divided City c1770-1920' will be delivered by Dr Éamon Phoenix on 5th November at 7pm entitled From Radical Hotbed to the Age of Riots: Belfast 1775-1886  The talks will be via Zoom live from Clifton House and lasts approximately 45 minutes followed by a Q&A session and cost £6 per device. Zoom codes are unique for each talk and will be sent out on the morning of the event.

The Chichester Family: Lords of Belfast Online Talk

The Chichester family laid the foundations for what would become Belfast City, owning it and the surrounding land for 250 years- a unique situation on the island of Ireland. The family's influence, both positive and negative, helped to shape the development of the town, and many streets still retain their names today. For 190 of the 246 years that Clifton House has been operating, Chichester descendants have acted as Presidents of the Belfast Charitable Society. Belfast and the Slave Trade Online Talk

This talk will examine Belfast and its ties to slavery, from those who owned Plantations and enslaved people, to the West Indian merchants who benefited from what Henry Joy termed “the infamous traffic in the flesh and bone of man”. It will also cover the abolitionist movement and those who dedicated their lives to the abolition of slavery. Thousands of people, young and old, to passing sailors, sought sanctuary within its walls.
